Thoughts on Adult Prom

When I met Dustin, I was 18 and still a senior in high school. Looking back it feels like a whole other lifetime! No bills, no kiddo, no real responsibilities. The extra weight I wanted to shed to look slim came off easily with a few workouts and I’m pretty sure I spent every. single. day. popping into the tanning salon. *shudders+ My poor skin! What was I thinking- that’s right …I wasn’t! haha!

As grateful as I am to have a Prom experience with my husband, and one that I so dearly cherish… the thought of an adult prom got me thinking a few years ago.

I first heard about the concept of an Adult Prom a few years ago as our community was hosting its first ever as a fundraiser for helping establish funds for our local Aquatic Center. Our community pool had drastically declined over the last few years and not only was it becoming a bit of an eye sore, it just wasn’t up to code or fully accessible to everyone. It definitely, desperately needed help.

The last two years, unfortunately, I hadn’t been able to attend Adult Prom. When we re asked if we could possibly DJ for this years’ event… I was pysched!

Oftentimes we have friends or family almost expect that because they know a DJ that we can commit to their event for free. Unfortunately, it just can’t be that way. We HAVE to run our business as that, a business.

But when we were asked Dustin IMMEDIATELY responded and offered to do it on donation. It was almost meant to be that we happened to have the date available too- because nowadays our weekends are pretty booked solid. Not only is this event fun, swanky, and high energy- it’s the perfect way we can dedicate our time, talent, and resources into helping improve our community. Dustin had an amazing point and said to me, “this is something that can help Warren’s (our sons) future too!”

He is so right. Not only will our kid(s) get to enjoy our little communities aquatic center- but his friends, and Lordy maybe even HIS kids will get to enjoy it.

Okay…off on a tangent I go. >.<

So I got to thinking about Adult Prom and it is just truly an amazing idea. Whoever came up with the concept of the Adult Prom is legitimately a genius.

I mean, think about it! Besides NONE of us having the body we had in high school…there is like a MILLION more pros than cons like there was in high school.

We don’t have to go dress shopping with our parents or our moms. Fun fact: When I went prom dress shopping with my mother years ago…she had tried on dresses WITH ME. Now, I love my mother dearly, but I was absolutely mortified. The fitting room attendant at the formal/Bridal shop had even pulled me aside and said that she had never had anyone’s mom do this before. Finally, after finding something my picky 16 year old self didn’t hate, I remember begging my mom to buy me the gown. It was definitely out of budget. I remember giving her the ol, “pleeeeeaaassssseee. It can be my birthday present too!”

I think after all the embarrassment she caused she finally realized it and caved. She reluctantly bought me the dress and it was a whole fiasco to this day I still remember.

As an adult…not only am I making my own money but I don’t need to ask or bring anyone dress shopping with me if I don’t want to. The budget is up to me and if it comes down to it, I can rock something that’s sleek and sparkly and $40 bucks from buy/sell/trade, goodwill, or Amazon.

There’s no weird peer pressure or expectations from a high school date.

Alcohol is legal.

No curfew.

It’s just going to be a good excuse to get dressed up for something except putting on my nice stretchy pants with pockets to go to Walmart. And also, it’s for a good cause!

We all need a little time to feel fabulous, ESPECIALLY when you’re grown.

I think Adult Prom has the potential to be better than hormonal teen prom.
